One of the issues that has held cloud computing back from even faster market adoption is a lack of understanding by rank and file business and consumer users of the benefits of moving to the cloud.

Spearheaded by Box.net, CEO’s of a number of prominent cloud vendors have banded together to talk about the benefits of the cloud with the; I Choose the Cloud, initiative. Other vendors who have joined include Xobni, SocialText, Zuora, Get Satisfaction and Freshbooks.

Will be interesting over time to see if other cloud vendors join this or similar initiatives as the cloud continues to becomes even more mainstream.

Salesforce and VMWare launched today a new Java Cloud Platform called VMforce. Utilizing the Spring Framework from VMWare’s recent SpringSource acqusition, the VMForce platform allows developers to create Java based applications on Force.Com.

Dubbed as “Cloud 2.0″ VMForce will allow the large base of Enterprise Java developers to build Cloud Based apps on Force.com. In addition to the Spring Framework,  VMForce will offer Java developers access to the SpringSource tc server, VMWare’s VCloud and VSphere Technology, the Force.com Developer platform and Force.com Chatter Services.

Soon to be available in developer preview, pricing details are yet to be announced.

Marc Benioff unveiled Salesforce.com’s Chatter application on the opening day of the firm’s annual DreamForce conference in Moscone Center In San Francisco.

Salesforce Chatter is a secure, private social network intended for enterprise use. Chatter has social computing features along the lines of Facebook and Twitter and is composed of a Chatter App and a Chatter Social Development Platform.

The Chatter App includes standard social computing features like Profiles, Status Updates, Feeds and Content Sharing.  Users of Twitter and Facebook will see familiar functionality and social media tools built into Chatter App.
